London Calling 2017

London Juni 2017

Our exciting week abroad started when we, the students of the 2AKELI, 2AKMIA and the 4AKETN (students from all departments at our school!), met up with our teachers Ms. Tarmann, Mr. Pöllendorfer and Ms. Hehenberger at Schwechat International Airport on the morning of Thursday, June 15, 2017. Our flight took off from Schwechat at 11 am, and we landed two hours later in London, Heathrow.

Several taxis picked us up from the airport and drove us to our host families, where we would be staying for the entire week. Staying with our host families gave us the perfect opportunity to get an insight into English culture!

Our daily schedule involved having lessons at the Centre of English Studies (CES) Wimbledon from 9:30 am to 1 pm, Monday through Friday, and afterwards going sightseeing with our teachers. Among the many attractions of London, Greenwich, one of the most historically rich areas of the city, was really worth a visit. We went there by boat, starting at Westminster pier. It was a scenic trip along the Thames river, which gave us the opportunity to take a truly different view of London, passing some of its most historical landmarks. During our stay, we visited nearly every major sight in London, such as the Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, London Eye, the Science Museum and Camden Market.

One of the highlights from the sightseeing was the Chelsea Stadium Tour, which took us behind the scenes at one of the world’s greatest football clubs, giving us access to areas normally reserved for players and officials only. Another highlight was our day trip to Brighton, a city on the south coast of England less than an hour by train from the UK capital. There we had the opportunity to enjoy the unusually warm weather on the beach. All in all, the language week was a phenomenal experience. We had a wonderful time not only immersing ourselves in British culture but also improving our English.

Finally, we would like to provide you with some useful tips on how to pack a suitcase for a language trip to London (see Austrian-English translation below):

Teacher’s instructions: “Nein! Also: Flüssigkeiten wie Shampoo, Zahnpaste, Deo etc. alles in den Koffer (=Abgabegepäck), auch Süßigkeiten für die Gastfamilie in den Koffer. Im Handgepäck keine Flüssigkeiten, außer ihr habt Augentropfen oder sowas mit – das muss dann in so ein Zipsackerl, max. 100 ml!”

English translation (by Mr. Schaundegl, 2AKMIA): “No! Well: Liquidets hau shampoo, tothpasta, deo etc. all in se sutkase, also sweats vor se gastfamili in se sutkase. Inse handbread no liquidets exept yu hafe eyetroops or so wat with se – this mast thän in so se sipsackl and max. 100ml! Sincerely, Schaundegl! As you can see, our trip to London was of great importance. Hopefully this information will be of some help to you ;-)
